Imagine that your day starts as any other day with your normal homeschooling routine. . . .

But by the end of the day you are paralyzed from the waist down!

Let me introduce you to Pamela Berthume.

Have You Ever Wanted To Help But Not Known How? It’s Easy … Here is a Needy Family You Can Bless AND

At the Same Time, Their Friends Will Bless You!

Pamela's like that. She makes friends faster than a crow flies. Pamela, a big bundle of energy contained in one small body, will take time out of her day to counsel new homeschoolers and they will walk away feeling like they have a life-long friend. Pamela has the ability to sense your need and then she will do what she can to help you.

Pam and Greg Berthume

Now Pamela needs help.

Pamela and Greg Berthume have been married 23 years and have homeschooled since 1993. They have four children and are the creators of Homeschoolopoly® - the game for homeschool families.

You would have never known it but Pamela is very familiar with illnesses. When she was a teen she had surgery for severe Scoliosis. As a result she developed Osteoarthritis of her spine and then had two spinal cord injuries due to the hardware. Since 1992 she has had Fibromyalgia and MS. She and her youngest two boys have Celiac Disease, an autoimmune disease that requires a limited diet. As a result of these conditions she has some secondary conditions: hearing loss, GERD, a hiatal hernia, diverticulosis, and recurring colon polyps.

Even so, Pamela has always been a chipper cheerleader.

August 29th started out for Pamela like any other day but ended up with her being paralyzed from the waist down with partial paralysis from the waist up due to her MS.

Now she is completely unable to walk or even stand and she has continual and sometimes excruciating pain. In addition she is also having trouble eating due to choking while swallowing.

Pamela and Greg are self-employed and have no insurance other than a catastrophic plan for Greg and the children. Recently Pamela was twice denied for Social Security disability so she is without even Medicaid.

Since the inception of HOMESCHOOLOPOLY® the majority of their income has come from Greg's software development end of the business – which is hourly contract work. With Greg now being Pamela's full-time care-giver and doing a great deal more of the parenting (especially providing transportation everywhere!), and the majority of the duties involved with running the business that Pamela was handling previously, his time left over for software development is meager at best. Even when he does make it to his office to get some focused work done he finds it nearly impossible to set aside his family’s needs and concentrate and focus on the task of developing software.

I am sure you agree the situation seems overwhelming.

Greg and Pamela are determined to live as normal of a life as possible. Greg needs to be able to work and Pamela is going to continue to homeschool her 3 children left at home. With their daughter, Brittney, in 11th grade, J Jay in 6th, and Elijah in K5, she is going to be busy.

Due to ongoing health issues they have quite a few medical bills they have been making payments on. Here is what Pamela and her family are now facing . . .

  • Now, with Pamela’s paralysis, they received the first bill from the hospital. It is $16,586.90!

  • In addition, she requires help from Physical Therapists 2-3 times per week and a Speech Therapist to help with her choking/swallowing problems. Of course, since she is paralyzed, these are all in-home care visits and each of these visits costs more than $100.00.

  • In addition to the first hospital bill there are bills coming for the CT scan, MRI, and Spinal Tap the doctors ordered for diagnosis during her one-week hospital stay. The costs for these will be many thousands of dollars.

  • In order for Pamela to be able to drive they need to convert her station wagon to have hand controls. These will cost $775.00.

  • With a fold up lift for the back of the station wagon she could then wheel to the driver's seat and transfer herself using a transfer board into the driver's seat.

  • Her 11-year-son could drive the wheelchair onto an lift and get it secured. A lift will cost $2,200.00. These things would give her the freedom to take her children to appointments and other homeschool and church events.

  • They also need descent ramps for the front door, back door, and the garage door. These are a minimum of $200.00 each.

  • Currently Greg is doing all of Pamela’s care and is unable to get any work done. In order for Greg to provide an income for their family they now need to hire someone at least part-time to serve as a care-giver for Pamela and do all the things a mother usually does like cooking, laundry, cleaning, etc. Experienced caregivers charge $12-$14 per hour.

  • Pamela has prescription medications that all must be paid for out of pocket. Even using all generic brands the monthly cost is $370.14.

Can you believe it there's more!

  • In addition, they are faced with the very real possibility of losing their home which is already all wheel chair accessible on the interior.

It’s Simple To Be A Blessing

During the building of Homeschoolopoly®, Greg and Pamela have made many friends who have smaller ministry/businesses like their own. We have banded together to bless you who will bless the Berthume's.

The story begins with a great responsibility falling on Vincent Wingfield, the teenage son of a widowed Virginia plantation owner. Vincent must decide what course of action he should take when a problem arises on the plantation. Unlike many stories of this American war, Mr. Henty brings to it a European viewpoint that differs drastically from the current views on the nature and reasons for this struggle. Henty’s "With Lee in Virginia" will introduce the reader to many of the famous battles of the 1860's along with learning much about the character of Robert E. Lee and his lieutenants.

Homeschooling: The Journey is the Reward
    $18.00 value

"Homeschooling: The Journey is the Reward"
    by Pamela Berthume

This new book by Pamela Berthume (co-creator of HOMESCHOOLOPOLY) offers a very unique and realistic view of homeschooling and frankly of life in general. Practically every family has had more then what seems to be their "fair share"of trials and tribulations.

Pamela's book, with a foreword written by Lorrie Flem of TEACH Magazine, is a must read. Both engaging and rare in format as Pamela's original book, which was written in 1999 and entitled Homeschooling, The Good, The Bad... and The Ugly!!!", has been left completely intact and untouched within these pages. In 2007 new insights, updates and stories from her ongoing journey over the years were added throughout the book in a different font. This provides the unique perspective of joining the Berthumes on their journey and seeing first hand how their homeschool and lives have grown over the years. Although her perspectives have changed on some issues, they have remained steadfast on others.

    Enter His Gates CD
    $9.97 value

    "Enter His Gates"
    by Lorrie Flem

This is a well-loved workshop Lorrie has done at conferences around the U.S. Known for her humor and gentleness, she will engage you at the same time she exhorts and inspires you to utilize our ability to talk to our Creator. One of the most common questions I am asked is "How do you find time for Quiet Time?" Are you too busy to pray?

Prayer is the foundation stone of our relationship with God, of our homeschools, and of the utmost importance. Let's look at why it is so vital, ways to fit it in, and waiting upon Him. With your desire and these prayer ideas you can make it work. Prayer took preference over many other important things for Jesus . . . let it be that way for you! A life-changing message to show you how and why to pray.
